Important RRP rule change by the EPA

On February 10th, 2016, the EPA announced their final rule change regarding refresher classes for renovators certified under the RRP (Renovation, Repair and Painting) lead-based paint rule.

Under the new rule, renovators are able to take their training online once every other time they have refresher training. If they do take it online, they will be re-certified for 3 years. If they take the traditional, in-person training with hands-on practice, their re-certification will last for 5 years.

Last year, the EPA gave a one-time, extension of time for renovators trained before March 31, 2011. Those people trained prior to March 31, 2011 have an additional year in which to receive their refresher training to become re-certified.

Any renovator who received their initial training prior to March 31, 2010, has until March 31, 2016 to complete their re-certification training. If they do not get their re-certification training on or before March 31, 2016, they will need to take the initial 8-hour training to get re-certified.

Renovators who took their initial RRP training between April 1, 2010 and March 31, 2011, have until the sixth anniversary of their training to take their refresher class. Here are two examples: if you took your initial training on April 29th, 2010, you have until April 29th, 2016 to complete refresher training. If you took your training on August 1st, 2010, you must complete your refresher training on or before August 1st, 2016.

ALSO NOTE: if you took your initial training between April 1, 2011 and December 31, 2011, you MUST COMPLETE your refresher training in 2016 – you have NOT BEEN GIVEN AN EXTENSION OF YOUR TIME to be recertified.

IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR ANYONE taking refresher training online - you must COMPLETE the training and pass the test ON or BEFORE the required date or you will need to take the initial 8-hour training to become re-certified. For example, if you took your initial training on May 3rd, 2010 and start online training on May 1st, 2016, but do not finish the training until May 4th, 2016, you will have missed your opportunity to take refresher training and MUST take the initial 8-hour class again.
