Asbestos Supervisor courses

To do asbestos abatement in Wisconsin, you can either be trained as an Asbestos Worker, or an Asbestos Supervisor. Asbestos Workers & Supervisors can work on any type of asbestos, and any amount of asbestos. Asbestos Workers get 4 days of training, Asbestos Supervisors get 5 days of training. Most people in Wisconsin take the 5 day training class - here is why: You must ALWAYS have an Asbestos Supervisor on site any time workers are in the "Regulated Work Area". Realistically, this means you need more than one Asbestos Supervisor. There are several reasons why almost everyone in Wisconsin gets Asbestos Supervisor training:

1) An Asbestos Supervisor can do a job by themself - an Asbestos Worker cannot. A licensed Asbestos Supervisor must be on site 100% of the time a worker is in the work area.

2) This is actually a big one - Supervisors will have 50-60 different dates to choose from to take the annual refresher class you need. Workers, have only about 10 classes a year to choose from.

3) If someone takes the 4-day worker class, and later wants to become a Supervisor, they have to start over and take the entire 5-day Supervisor class.
There is also Asbestos Operations & Maintenance training, however, that is for workers such as electricians and plumbers who encounter less than 3 Square Feet, or 3 Lineal feet of asbestos.

We offer the Asbestos Supervisor Initial class every month. We offer the Asbestos Supervisor Refresher class about 25 times per year. See the links below for a schedule:

This INITIAL course is designed for people that are going to conduct asbestos abatement. Topics include: background and health effects of asbestos, personal protective equipment, abatement methods and options, federal/state/local regulations, decontamination, disposal, and air monitoring. If you are planning on starting an asbestos abatement company or on becoming an independent contractor - this five day class is what you want to take first.

Asbestos Inspector courses

In Wisconsin, a person must be certified to do asbestos work.
Asbestos inspector certification is required for a person who finds and judges the condition of materials with asbestos or that may have asbestos. They look at the material and collect samples for lab tests and write a report about the results. Both individual certification and company certification are required.
Wisconsin requires PROPERTY OWNERS to conduct a thorough asbestos inpection of any building or structure prior to conducting renovations or demolition.
The three-day Asbestos Inspector course is designed to teach people how to conduct an asbestos inspection (suspect materials and sampling) and write an inspection report. Topics include: background and health effects of asbestos inspectors, the role of inspectors, bulk sampling techniques, regulations, friable vs. non-friable asbestos, and personal protective equipment.

Asbestos in Schools and commercial buildings

The EPA has created a rule that governs asbestos work in schools - K through 12. This rule is called the Asbestos Emergency Response Act (AHERA). The AHERA rule does not require asbestos to be removed from schools, it requires it to be carefully manged in place.
The AHERA rule defined all types of Asbestos Training, and the requirements of the school district. AHERA requires schools to: periodically check the condition of asbestos; keep records of these periodic checks, and notify the public that they can view these records; notify any temporary workers of where the asbestos is; and to train their workers for either 2 hours (for custodial workers), or 16 hours (called Operations and maintenance) about asbestos.
The two-day Operations and Mmaintenance class explains the basics of asbestos, and how to do small maintenance and repair jobs in your school, plus it explains the rules and procedures for larger jobs - who can do them, etc. That course was originally created just for schools under the AHERA rule (Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act), and then was later adopted by OSHA to cover all commercial buildings.
AHERA also required school districts to Designate a Person to be in charge of the distrct's asbestos program. We offer a 1-day "Designated Persons" course. That course covers specific rules and requirements for schools. We go over the annual mailing your are supposed to do to students, faculty and other workers, the "book" you are supposed to be maintaining (called the Management Plan), 6-month reviews of the condition of all your asbestos (that you are supposed to do), and requirements for Asbestos Inspections that are supposed to be done every 3 years.

The two-day course (Asbestos Operations and Maintenance) is an "in-person" course, that is offered at least once per month. The Asbestos Designated Persons course is offered at least once every 2 months.

Exterior Asbestos - Wisconsin only

Wisconsin has a special license for people who do asbestos removal ONLY of the exterior of buildings. This allows for the removal of asbestos roofing or asbestos siding, as well as window glazing. All of the work must be on the exterior, and the asbestos must remain "intact".
The work must be supervised by an Asbestos Supervisor (with 5 days of training), or an Exterior Asbestos Supervisor (2 days of training). The supervisor must be on site any time a worker is in the work area.

Required training for a Exterior Asbestos Worker is a 1-day training course. The worker course is offered in both English and Spanish.

An Exterior Asbestos Supervisor must take the 1-day worker course PLUS a 1-day Exterior Supervisor course.
