Reccomended Courses:

For contractors, landlords, those who want to understand abatement (and risk assessors who want to expand their level of expertise in making recommendations.) A supervisor is required to be onsite at all times (in most situations). Therefore completing all four course is recommended.

    We have worked with OSHA to develop courses that meet the safety needs of workers in the Midwest. This course is intended to provide an awareness of OSHA regulations concerning lead exposure in the workplace. It DOES NOT satisfy the training requirements for EPA/WIS-DHS renovation/hazard reduction activity.

    This course is designed to educate students how to work in a lead safe manner. This course meets HUD's requirement for 1 day lead safe training. This course is required before attending the Lead Abatement Work Course. No abatement work can be conducted by attending this course by itself. Topics covered: background of lead, health effects, regulations, interim controls, cleanup, disposal and cleaning verification.

    This class meets the EPA and WIS-DHS criteria for the RRP (renovation, repair, painting) policy that went into effect April 2010! Important reminder: One person per crew will need to complete this course for any renovations in residential properties built prior to 1978. click here to link to publications that describe the rule.

    Lead Abatement Work Initial Course CEU Credits available Back to top

    This course is designed to educate students how to perform lead abatement. Topics include: roles and responsibilities of a lead worker, lead hazard reduction methods, lead hazard reduction options, and extensive hands-on training. Six out of the 8 hours is spent on hands-on activities. (Lead Safe Renovator is a pre-requisite).

    Lead Safe Renovator is a pre-requisite. This course is required if you want to work on Wisconsin's new $14 million lead grant, or you neeed to do work "orderd" by the Health Department.

    Lead Abatement Supervisor Course CEU Credits Available Back to top

    This course teaches students how to facilitate a lead abatement project. Topics include: occupant protection plans, inspection and risk assessment report interpretation, project management, legal and lnsurance, federal, state and local regulations, as well as hands-on activities. OSHA topics such as lead in construction, respirators, personal protective clothing, worksite safety. This course is recommended for property owners/management as well as home improvement contractors and others disturbing lead paint. In virtually all situations, a Lead Supervisor is needed ON SITE for abatement jobs. At least one Lead Supervisor is recommended for each company. Most companies have over 50% of their staff trained as lead supervisors. .

    Certifications for lead investigation disciplines:

    After attending Lead Sampling Technician and Lead Hazard Investigator, the Dept. of Health and Family Services will issue a Hazard Investigator card. You can perform risk assessment and lead safe investigations.


    After attending Lead Sampling Technician, Lead Inspector course and an XRF manufacturer training, the Wisconsin Department of Health will issue you a Lead Inspector Card.


    After attending Lead Sampling Technician, Lead Hazard Investigator, Lead Inspector and an XRF manufacturer training, the Wisconsin Department of Health will issue a Lead Risk Assessor card. A Lead Risk Assessor can perform both Inspections and Risk Assessments.


    The Dept of Health requires an application to be filled out and they do have experience requirements. Contact the Dept of Health at 608-261-6876.


    *** The risk assessor discipline is a federally recognized discipline. In the first three days of the Lead Sampling Technician and Hazard Investigator courses, there is not much time allotted for the presentation and discussion of the extensive regulations that govern lead issues. By taking all three courses, an extensive understanding of the regulations can be obtained. By understanding and being aware of the regulations, individuals can learn where their new skills and services are needed and can be applied.

    Topics include: dust, soil, and paint chip sampling, clearance procedures and levels. This is a required course prior to Lead Inspector and Lead Hazard Investigator.

    The lead inspector's job is to detect the presence of lead and generate a report. The topics of this course include: roles and responsibilities of a lead inspector, regulations, protocol for conducting single family and multi-family inspections, methodologies for conducting sampling, clearance testing, XRF use, report preparation, recordkeeping, and legal and insurance.

    Lead Hazard Investigator Initial Course CEU Credits Available Back to top


    The Hazard Investigator course focuses on detecting lead hazards and listing potential remedies. Topics include: source of environmental contamination, lead hazard screen protocol, EBL investigations, interpreting sample results, interim controls and abatement options, how to perform a risk assessment, lead safe investigations, and preparation of the report.

    Lead Sampling Technician course is a prerequisite

    **Milwaukee Lead Recommends all three courses (Lead Sampling Technician, Lead Inspector Training, and Lead Hazard Investigator) to gain an in depth understanding of lead consulting activities. Completion of the Lead Sampling, Lead Inspector and Lead Hazard Investigator plus XRF Manufacturer training (most often free) is required in order to become certified as a Lead Risk Assessor.
